Rehabilitation of aircraft parking aprons at Singapore Changi Airport

Changi Airport Group (CAG) has laid out a blueprint to rehabilitate 31 of the 80 m by 80 m aircraft parking aprons in four phases over a period of 10 years. These aprons are mainly located at Terminal 1, Terminal 2 and Cargo Area of Singapore Changi Airport. As part of an on-going drive to achieve sustainable development, CAG has embarked on the use of recycled aggregate in the production of new concrete for these rehabilitation works.

In the first phase of the project, Samwoh was engaged to carry out the necessary works to replace 8 parking aprons. First of all, the existing aircraft parking aprons, which were constructed with concrete, have to be demolished in sequence. These concrete wastes were then processed into recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) using mobile crusher near the worksite.

By mass of coarse aggregate in the mix design, the conventional aggregate (i.e. granite) was replaced by 20 % of RCA for the production of concrete. After the preparation works have been completed, the aircraft parking aprons were reinstated with this eco-friendly concrete mix.

The associated facilities such as drainage system and oil interceptor with loading class F900 gratings and covers, static grounding and equipment netting systems as well as the apron markings were restored too.
